Thanks. Do salvia thrive in shade? These are in almost full shade.

I'm going to take my friend's offer and get some into my shady yard. We'll see what happens!

Funny thing. As we were digging up plants for me, we found the plant tag the previous owner had put down neer the flower bed. It's Butterfly Plant, buddleia, Lo and Behold Blue Chip.

There's no way the original pic is Buddleja. It's Salvia.

The photo you were wanting ID on is not Buddleja, for comparison:

@ShadyGreenThumb. I agree it has to be Black and Blue Salvia.
It will grow in shade and every where else, too. In the DFW area it is a little invasive. No real winter to keep it in check here. I would wonder if it would be worse for you. But if you have a large wild area it would be okay. If you would want a tamer large blue salvia I would go with an indigo spires and it grows and blooms in the shade! Not a full Texas sun plant.

May joy and happiness be yours this week!

This is enlightening as
I didn't know that some of the sages grow in shade. Mine are in partial shade but look like they'd be happier with more sun.

Okay thanks. Very confusing finding another lue flower tag in another blue flower bed. Salvia it is...but Amistad? These flowers are purple not blue.

Indigo Spires and Mystic Spires are water hogs and have daily transpiration issues. They are now planted in dappled shade and some in full shade. My shade comes from pecan trees. Pecans are the last tree to leaf out. Both Spires are pretty much blooming by the time that happens. Old timers say you will not get a frost after the pecans start to leaf. Then again I hardly get any frost here. Almost all my other Salvias such as greggii take more sun.

May your days be full of peace and joy!

If it's more purple it could be Salvia 'Amistad'
Your photo just looked more blue.

Totally agree that the plant is a Salvia. To put it in simple terms: Salvia is a member of the Lamiaceae family or mint family. Members of the mint family have 3 main characteristics: strongly scented (rub the leaves and smell), square stems, and bilabiate flowers (2 upper lobes and 3 lower lobes). Check your plant for these characteristics. The easiest tests are the scent and square stems if the flowers are not present. I love Salvia guaranitica or Black and Blue Salvia - a hummingbird magnet in my garden!

Buddleia is a member of the Scorphulariaceae family or figwort family. While flowers in the figwort family may have a 2 lipped flower as in the case of the snapdragon, they also may have flower parts in 4's or 5's as in the case of the butterfly bush.

My 'Black & Blue' Salvia does best in only morning full sun with shade from hot afternoon sun.

Cheryl I live in Pearland and to me it looks like it could be Black and Blue Salvia. Are the stems square? If they are, it's definitely a salvia of some type.
