I love gardening & love to share.
I know nothing about Wisteria other than it is beautiful and all that I have seen flourishes. My sister lives in California and was asking me if one could graft a Wisteria plant to make it bloom. She says that one is blooming but the one next to it is not. She says one is a male and the other a female and that only the female plants bloom. Everything I read about getting a Wisteria plant to bloom mentions everything except doesn't address the fact that the sex of the plant determines whether it blooms or not.

Does anyone have any feedback as to (1) the sex of a Wisteria plant determines whether it blooms or not; (2) if you graft one to the other will it produce flowers; (3) how can she get it to bloom?

Thank you very much!

Wisteria do NOT come in male and female plants!

The reasons for not blooming that I found are three:
Plant is not mature enough.
Plant is not getting enough light
Plant is getting to much fertilizer, particularly too much nitrogen.

Thank you so much, BigBill. Since I am not in California myself, I will let my sister know about your feedback and see which of the three reasons that you stated might be why her Wisteria is not blooming. She loves lavender and has a gigantic lavender (as well as pink) Bouganvilla, which she has had for years and blooms beautifully. I that she will be happy if/when she can get the Wisteria plant that is not blooming full of beautiful flowers also.

Again, thank you!
