How do these daylilies keep "traveling" to places I did not plant them in? Have tried to rid my garden of them for years. How does that happen? Thank you
.

They are rhizomatous, and the rhizomes can be quite long. They would not be growing from seed because these daylilies do not have normal female parts.

I had wondered about using them to hold a steep bank. If they area alone they should be ok, right?

They are great in areas where they are on their own. I have them in several spots on our 50 acres.

I dug all mine out of a main bed. But it was quite magical how they popped up later. I wish all my clumps had this vigour.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Yep, I've been trying to get rid of mine for years. I might try that mean trick of painting a cut stem of theirs with a weed killer. It might be the only way to make sure it actually dies.

They are really pretty. If they weren't so invasive...

I had planted some double orange daylilies on a street corner years back, and they "traveled" to a garden area more than 30 feet away and sprouted in the midst of a clump of Ice Carnival! When we moved I dug a portion of the group and planted it, later dug it up and separated out the fans which were still blooming with Ice Carnival. This wonderful historic white had held its own despite the marauding squatter and now is happily growing independently.

Mine have never moved from their spot, which have probably been longer than I have been on the property. Maybe because it is pretty dry in my location. Shrug!

I have mine planted in a couple of dry locations, too, and they don't spread much.

One interesting thing is that the deer have never eaten them, even though they are growing in a rough area in a back field where the deer frequently visit!
