Rose (Rosa 'Lemon Fizz')

Rose (Rosa 'Sunny Knock Out')

I have the knock out and so far am disappointed, it dosen't bloom much at all compared to the double pink one I have. It doesn't keep nice foliage and always is dying back and just looks puny. The flowers are a soft yellow when they first open but very quickly turn to a dirty cream looking color, not yellow at all. I am just kind of unhappy with it. I seen the lemon fizz at a walmart and they are actually yellow and wondering how they perform in comparison?

I don't have either of these roses. However, I can tell you what it states in this book entitled "Roses Without Chemicals" by Peter Kukielski.
Lemon Fizz - shrub, bushy, rounded growth to 3 feet. A yellow rose in the Kolorscape series, 5 petals, open flat & reveal a lovely cluster of stamens. color of stamens - orange to golden yellow. The yellow color of the blooms is very fade resistant ( to me that would be important).
Ratings:
Disease Resistance : 59 (55-60 / Superior resistance)
Flowering:27 ( 21 -30 / profuse number of blooms)
Fragrance: none
Total Rating: 86 (80 - 89 / Excellent rose
Hope this helps.

I tried Sunny Knockout and found it struggled even though it had one of the best locations in my yard. Never really grew, got tired of babying it and yanked it out after three years.

I've managed to kill both of them before I decided that the Old Garden Roses were the only ones for me.

Harison"s Yellow is lovely if you are OK with a once bloomer. And if you have about a quarter of an acre to spare, Mermaid is a favorite of mine. A modern yellow rose that many people praise is Julia Child.

I'm looking for something that gets 3-4 ft tall and is bushy like because it is going to be in front of my house, lving room window and faces south. I really wanted yellow roses there, and the sunny knock out has a fragrance I really love, but I just can't get it to do anything for me.

Frillylily,

You might want to consider Sparkle & Shine. You can read about it and see pictures here:

Thank you!
Does it bloom more than once or just one time? It is a perfect color for me.

Sparkle & Shine blooms throughout the season until frost, with short rest periods after each bloom cycle.

Frilly, Knockout croaked and Lemon Fizz is flourishing. If that helps any. Hilarious!

Carol, thanks for the recommendation. Last night. I was online checking out the reviews of Carruth's Sparkle & Shine (Julie Newmar x Julia Child). It looks like a strong yellow that does not fade unlike one of it's parents Julia Child. And, as an add bonus, it has fragrance. I would think it's a pretty strong rose considering Heirloom Rose's is growing it as an own root. By the way, your photos are beautiful. Is your Sparkle & Shine an own root or grafted?

My plant is budded on Dr. Huey rootstock. Weeks Roses also makes it available on its own root. Mine is a short plant, so I have to bend over a lot to smell the flowers. That is the only disadvantage I have discovered.

Another yellow rose that I noticed at a public garden this summer because of the beauty of its blooms and its beautiful, clean foliage is Graham Thomas. It really stood out for these qualities compared to most of the other roses in this garden. I do not own it myself, so perhaps others who do will comment.

@MargieNY, do you grow Graham Thomas?

I grow GT, it's huge, it's over my satellite pergola and it gets blackspot for me every year so doesn't always look the greatest.

Carol, I tried to grow Graham Thomas 30+ yrs ago when I lived on the south shore of Long Island but the flowers did not open properly and had black spot. It was sited in a sunny south location. Initially I thought the flowering problem was caused because of it's high petal count being between 26 and 40 petals. However, I presently do have Munstead Wood 40+ petals & Sharifa Asma 40+ petals growing in partial shade and they have no problem flowering. I spoke with a rose grower and he said he felt balling was tied to a fragrance gene????

Thanks, Sue and Margie. Graham Thomas sounds like a bad idea!
