Hi everyone,

I came a cross smokeygardens.com and was wondering if anyone has dwelt with them. If so how was ths experience? I am wanting to get into daylilies inexpensive as possible to see how they do for me. I got a couple once before on eBay but died in 2 weeks. Not healthy plants. Any help and info would be great.

Richard,
My very first foray into daylilies were from Smokey's Gardens. The plants were in good condition and, for a beginner, the prices were right. The link to their Green Page on here is below.

Good luck, happy shopping, and ask all the questions you need. There's always someone who knows something about your query...

I cannot recommend ordering from Smokey's. My experience is but one person's, but let me share it with you.

I've ordered from Smokey's twice: once in 2015 (I believe), and once in 2017. The first time I ordered, I got one of their 25-fan deals. I generally knew what I was getting (i.e. not the best nor the most variance, nor labeled plants), but probably two-thirds of what I received were yellow. I did get a few ones I really liked (one of them was Jo Barbre - which I love and is so unique, which made it easy for me to figure out; also got some really tall stella-like lemon and red daylilies in the batch) and again, I realized that at like a buck or two per plant, I wasn't getting the very best.

My order last year, however, was a different story. I ordered 9 different dayliles (Double Dragon, Cameron Quantz, Common Sense, Do The Twist, Persian Priest, Carlotta, Alias Peter Parker, Green Eyes Wink & Mae Graham). They also sent me an unregistered plant.

===DIDN'T GET WHAT I ORDERED===

To start with, the Persian Priest I received was definitely not Persian Priest. What I got has a tiny burgundy bloom instead of the distinct purple and gold shown on their website. In addition, Do The Twist (which didn't bloom until this year) isn't Do The Twist: it's a beautiful daylily that I received (attached below) but nothing at all comparable to Do The Twist. Carlotta was the same situation: what I got was red and yellow, but the bloom looks nothing like the actual flower.

The other ones I was generally satisfied with and appear to be what they were supposed to be, but - and this is very important:

===SMOKEY'S PHOTOS ARE SUPER MISLEADING===

I was a fool to not Google and/or use this website to double-check the veracity of what was being sold. For example, their Carlotta photo looks like an immaculate frilly double, whereas the actual bloom is nothing like that (attached below is a comparison of what they had on their website vs a standard photo from here). Maybe that was a unique bloom and technically accurate, but very misleading at the very least. A lot of their daylily photos were like this last time I checked. At minimum, most of their photos appear to be highly doctored with contrast and saturation bumped up to make the daylilies look more stunning than they actually are. I think many places do this, but it was/is on steroids at Smokey's.

I never bothered complaining because, hey, I got 20 fans out of it and most are decent; it's usually too big of a hassle to bother with returning plants and the like unless you've shelled out a lot of money. Still, to have one-third of what you receive not be what you ordered is ridiculous.

----

I might make a recommendation, since I believe you're taking a risk with Smokey's anyway: I've heard a lot of good about Homestead Farms. A friend ordered from them and was very pleased (of course, I know people who were satisfied with Smokey's, too!). Their prices are super reasonable, they have plenty of gorgeous multi-fan varieties for $5-10, their reviews on Dave's Garden are 65-1 (positive-negative) and the reviews on here seem good too. I'm going to give them a try this year once I have the cash to spare. At minimum, I think they'll be a good place to go to for genetics. Oakes is of course a great place as well, but some of their plants are just way too overpriced when you do comparison shopping (but you get a hefty clump for what you pay; all depends on what you're wanting).

Mikelos, that has happened to me several times with lots of companies. All you do is send them a pic from your phone and they'll tell you, "Oh, that's a plant that grows right next to the one you ordered!" Then they'll send you the right one! You should never be unhappy with daylilies!

Forgot to say, that's how you can learn the name of the wrong plant, whether you keep it or toss it.

Can I just say that it's nice to see a critical review? Too many people remain silent about their negative experiences, and the Green Pages only allow positive reviews.

That said, we also have to bear in mind that our daylilies will differ from the sellers' due to temperature, soil conditions, fertilizer, etc. I learned quite some time ago that other members' plant photos don't always indicate what my own daylilies will look like, and there are times when mine will actually do much better.

I must say that does not look like an enhanced photo, in fact I am surprised they would show such an unflattering photo of Carlotta.
I have never ordered from them.

From a landscaping prospective, their multiple single fan sales are great. I've always received healthy, ready to grow plants. But I have received a few "not the right plant" ones, over the years. I ordered 10 "Little Fred" last year, ended up with 9 "Paradise Princess" and one Noid. I did try to contact them after they bloomed and got no response. Now, I really have grown to love "Paradise Princess", but I wanted and ordered something else, so not so good. But that certainly hasn't happened every order. Now that I've become more selective and want to try hybridizing, I'm ordering from the hybridizer (if possible and affordable) or from tried and true sites such as O'Bannon Springs (no longer available, other that their own intro's) or Valley Of The Daylilies (always big, happy plants, and the right ones). No offense to Smokey's, if you need a bunch, they can certainly deliver. But if you really are dead set on a certain CV, there are lots of other sure things (vendors) out there. I only mentioned a couple. Having said that, I ordered multiple single fans of "Tiny Tim" and "Flash Force" from Smokey's this year and they are growing great, and blooming already! Only one noid, so really, a very good bargain at the bulk rate. Just depends on what you want. I would highly recommend them from the landscapers prospective, not so much for the collector or hybridizer wanna be.

Tina, O'Bannon Springs still sells other hybridizers' plants on-site, they just don't ship them anymore.
But I have to second your opinions on these two sellers. Steve Williams has always shipped me huge, healthy plants, though I've never actually visited his gardens. And I love the Bachmans, I want them to adopt me so I can live at Valley Of The Daylilies! I visit at least twice every summer, and I always come home with huge, fantastic clumps. (I have never had VOTD ship to me, so I can't comment on that aspect, but their dependability and generosity would probably also apply to online purchases.)

I won't order again because of enhanced photos... although some of the photos submitted on AHS are enhanced as well. Through some expensive disappointments I've learned to check and double check AHS and here for accurate representations.

I use the daylily auction and direct buys... I like Ashwood Gardens a lot. I try and stay with growers/sellers in my zone +/-. I've had some lilies I've purchased underperform or flat-out die when from Florida. Sighing!

You really need to belong to couple of FaceBook groups solely dedicated to reviewing daylily sellers.

And just for the record, I will not order from Smokey's Daylilies. They sent small, poor quality, over priced plants both times I ordered years ago.

Suppose I should add my experience with Smokeys.

It could be that they have some enhanced or unrealistic photos on their website but not to the point that it has been an issue for me or even something I noticed.

I like their large selection, especially of older cultivars. I have ordered from them twice. Both times received exactly the plants I ordered. Fans were definitely on the small side, sometimes to the point that it made me uneasy. Yet every one has survived and thrived for me.

I would order from them again.

This is 'Ted's Tribute to Linda' from Stout Gardens.

Don't know anything about this company, but I guess this is what you've got to expect for $12.00 and $8.98 shipping.

Good thing daylilies are such glorified weeds!
