Today's beautiful banner of a Oncostele orchid has inspired me to think about brown and gray flowers. Both colors can be under-appreciated because they don't necessarily "pop" like brighter oranges, reds, and yellows.

Many Gymnocalyciums are a very faint brown or gray (often described as "off white" or "dirty white"), some Zinnia haageanas approach purplish brown, and I also think of Stapelias (and relatives), Gazanias, and African daisies.

Today I pored over the database and found examples of flowers that fall along the brown and gray spectra. Most of the flowers which have gray tones also have brown ones, but there are many with brown tones that do not have grey (these tend more toward red and orange).

Please feel free to add more. Smiling

Very pretty! What species is that?

The color reminds me VERY much of some poppies I grew several years ago which were "Mother of Pearl."

The current formulation of "Mother of Pearl" doesn't seem to have as many gray examples.

I've shared this elsewhere on the forums but here's a grayish pink Gymnocalycium from today.
