Today's plant of the day for Salvias is Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus 'Dutch Mill').

I tried to look this one up online, and I could only find it listed as Rosmarinus Officinalis 'Dutch Mill'. I typed the name with single quotes as it was typed on the website. In the info on that site it calls this a variety of Rosmarinus Officinalis (website is www.dibaggioherbs.com and I haven't heard of it before doing this search).

Given what we learned with the post about Salvia Caneriensis Steely Wings, I am curious if the name of this one is listed correctly? After reading the article from FBTS about naming and trademarks, I would say that if this is indeed a variety then the single quotes would not be appropriate- if a variety then it would be Rosmarinus Officinalis var Dutch Mill I believe? I suppose another possibility is that the word variety was incorrectly used on the website.

But my biggest curiosity is that the genus name is Rosmarinus, not Salvia? So is this a Salvia or not? Confused

Judy,

Yes, the rosemary plants are and have been salvias. I'm still getting use to it.

It's too late now to talk more about it.

@jg0613 Judy,

Here's a FBTS link that talks about rosemary plants being in with the salvias.

https://www.fbts.com/salvia-ro... (dated Jan. 27, 2018)

Part of what Kermit states (scrolling down the page to the third paragraph), from his link, is....

"Joining the Big Genus
Despite its introduction to horticulture long ago, rosemary faced uncertainty about its mint-family ancestry until last year when DNA analysis showed the tiny genus Rosmarinus to be more appropriately placed in the huge Salvia genus of about 1,000 species."

Only found one pic of the leaves of Dutch Mill.

The flowers are blue, but didn't find any pics showing them. Can't remember where I found out the flowers were blue, as it was a long time ago that I added the details to this database.

Marilyn, first of all thank you for the link to the excellent article from FBTS! As always their articles are very infornative and interesting. Rosemarys are beautiful so I am happy that they have found that they belong in the Salvia genus! I agree- the more the merrier!
That website that I had found with info about this plant had no photos but did say the flowers are blue. Smiling

Judy,

You're welcomed. I'm glad I found that FBTS link. I agree, the articles are always so informative and interesting. I appreciate that Kermit takes the time to do them. I've been thinking about growing a rosemary plant in a container. Maybe I'll finally get around to it next year.
