Am going to move and don't want to leave my plants behind. Have daylilies and bearded iris.
I don't know when this move will happen, we are just beginning to look for a house. If I dig and plant in containers, will they survive, maybe until spring?

Have you considered having a reserve on what you want so you can come back and dig when you find your new home? They have to be protected in your zone. I'm in 5b. They won't overwinter outside in pots but not sure about the garage. My sister lives in Carol Stream and sunk the pots in the ground and mulched over them to plant in spring. Worked great.

Thanks for your help. Didn't think about having a reserve on them and then coming back. The idea of potting them first and sinking into the ground would make it easier to come back for. This sounds like it may be my plan.

If you have a vegetable garden it works perfectly there and you can put them all together. Be sure to mark them well unless you don't care about their names.

A plan on paper is also a good idea, especially if (like me) you don't think you need one.

They are currently in a raised bed. That's where I will put the pots.
I also have a paper plan of my current bed. Will have to find a way to put names permanently on the pot - black plastic - so I'll know what they are when I move them.

Some cities have a community garden area. Here we have beds plotted out and they charge $50 a year (?) for a bed. You can renew your rental ea spring. Maybe call some of your area garden clubs and ask around.
