Have you considered having a reserve on what you want so you can come back and dig when you find your new home? They have to be protected in your zone. I'm in 5b. They won't overwinter outside in pots but not sure about the garage. My sister lives in Carol Stream and sunk the pots in the ground and mulched over them to plant in spring. Worked great.
