Ursula said:Here was one of the reasons that I really really wanted a greenhouse! My Vanda David Gardner, after I had it for ca 10 years, in Summer outside, in Winter in our bright sunroom with an additional plant light above it, and here in its brand new surroundings! This was in 2001!
I watered that plant daily over the bathtub, let it drip off and placed back into its spot. Eventually I had trouble fitting it through the bathroom door.

The mother plant unfortunately kicked the bucket around 2004 or 2005 ( not enough aeration with all those tight keikis) and I kept a keiki for some more years.
I had other Vandas, but none ever grew as well as this one.

I other words, Vandas can be grown without a greenhouse in a cooler zone. But, watering them is serious dedication!!

Ursula; This post inspired me to put my 10 Vanda's in a Warm "Spa" of Liquid Kelp/Super Thrive/Blossom Booster solution this morning.. sorta an early Thanksgiving Meal for them nodding

Glenn, that sounds perfect to me, Vandas have hearty appetites! Thumbs up I never used Super thrive, but blossom boosters are a good idea when they get ready to bloom.
I overheard years ago a conversation between Orchid vendors about Super thrive. The vendor brought in lots of bare root plants to a show and mentioned that he uses a dilute sugar solution instead. He said it was more reasonable money wise and supposedly did the same. Not sure if I would ever do that, I can just imagine the ant population exploding?

There is a show January 25, 2020 at the McNeely Center I think it is.
Just google the Minneapolis/St.Paul Orchid Society.

Yesterday was our orchid club holiday party and the centerpieces were auctioned off. I wasn't the high bidder but one of our very sweet members ( AOS judge Nancy Losgar) bought up several and gave me one!

How pretty 'Equilab' is, I love that picotee edge.

Beautiful picture of you Lindsay, and what a magnificent plant you got! Those flowers are huge as well as being just a stunning color combo.

The little Papaya Parachute is a cutie, too. Good luck with that, and we'll enjoy the pictures of your stinky flowers. Whistling

On the way home from our Christmas visit to The Villages, we took the scenic route through Apopka, and of course I had to stop at First Orchids and tried Ecuagenera USA, too but they were closed.

I scored 3 lovely little Dens in bloom for $3 each - the price has not gone up in over 2 years, bless them! Also a pretty, spotty little Brassavola cross. None with names. Still I'm delighted with my new babies. Pictures tomorrow.

Hoping the Ecuagenera folks will show up for the Sarasota show, the first weekend of January, so I"ll have a chance to look at some of their gorgeous and unusual flowers then. I certainly didn't blow the budget too badly today, anyway. (except I did also buy a Finger Lime tree for my garden, at a little home nursery in St. Cloud but that is outside of the orchid budget of course)

Of course! Finger limes are great, I had one at the last house but they are very tender and I lost it one year in a cold spell. I'll have to figure out a way to detour through Apopka next month when we meet the in-laws in The Villages. Maybe a stop in Mt Dora also...... $3 dens are an incentive.

You definitely must drop in at First Orchids. It looks like a commercial operation and the proprietors are Thai or Vietnamese I think. Not much English. But they are very friendly and welcoming. Great bargains on orchids. I've posted the new baby portraits in the bloom thread.

Got my card for the N. Jersey Show today.
It coincides with the Miami show so no Ecuagenera but Andy's will be there and my pre-order is on its way to him.
BTW, the show is at Rutgers Jan 17-19 and is FREE!
