Big Balls of Colour

By Joannabanana
May 16, 2012

You see them hanging 12 feet up along boulevards, blowing in the wind and totally exposed to the elements. Big beautiful balls of colour! How is this possible for the entire season? You rarely see anyone maintaining them. Ah - but they are. Let's have a look at how you can create and maintain your own big ball of colour in your garden.

Thank you Renee! Yes, except for the photo at the parade with the car...a commercial greenhouse did that one for the town.

This is how my fetish for petunias became. All the baskets I had done in early years really were dogs. Every year my family would go to watch a parade in the small town that I grew up (near), I was raised on a farm. Anyways, I made it a mission to figure out how to create these big displays for my garden.

By importance:
1. Plant variety
2. Size of pot to pot into
3. Number of plants per basket
4. Fertilizer (slow release and bloom booster) and water frequently. The bigger the pot, the less maintenance
4. strong sturdy bracket and location
Oh and I do not deadhead..no time.

Thanks a bunch!!

I tip my hat to you.

I invite all of you to take a before, mid summer and late season picture of your masterpiece to share with this article. This year, My front yard has Pink, White and Burgundy, Back yard is Blue (looks dark purple), lavender and burgundy. I have just started doing my baskets & window boxes. It may snow on Friday, so I will add this year's photos next week.

Perhaps for greenhouses. The stuff I bought is for sealing off the insulation in your walls, then gyprock.
