Thread OP

How can I tame my ZZ? Just moved homes from a low light situation to much more open space and light. In previous situation, my ZZ has grown in curly Qs and awkward and irregular stretches. Should I trim? I know ZZs aren't very good at propagating so I'm not sure how to maintain this.

In low light, the larger ZZ's do tend to start to flop over as their stems are not strong enough to keep them upright, the way they are when grown in stronger light. Improper watering can also contribute to this.

One thing you might try is to loop soft string or yarn around the base of all the stems. As you pull the string loop tighter it will pull all the stems together so they are more upright. If they all lean in one direction, you may need to reposition the rootball a bit in the pot or use a stake.

Healthy stems and leaves can be propagated in damp potting mix or in water.

You can stake them just to help prop it up or in Spring separate them into their own smaller containers and stake again till it anchors itself much better. Just to add, I do quarter turns of the container since it will naturally seek bright light, to help it grow a bit more upright.

I was able to separate mine before when I got it, did not have to cut anything. It was good to see easy enough to separate the rhizomes carefully, I have a barbecue skewer to gently untangle the roots and a brush to carefully stuck soil. But I did this in April, mid-Spring time so conditions are warmer already.
