For anyone interested in gingers, Tim Chapman at Gingerwood just sent out a newsletter for the spring season. I am copying it here. Hope this ok.
The pictures did not transfer over but you can see some on his Facebook page.

Curcuma hybrid 'Gold Dust'

Is it Spring yet?

... no, not yet unfortunately. Spring is just around the corner and the anticipation of that burst of life is what gets us through those terrible gingerless days. Winter is the time to plan, order new plants, and make other preparations for the season ahead. At the nursery winter is the time to confirm wholesale orders, plan out propagation priorities and schedule, sign up for spring garden shows, write and actually send out newsletters ON TIME, work on new flower beds, schedule talks, figure out where all these new gingers are going to go, work on website additions, and so much more.

The list of new introductions (some new to US others new to the nursery) is a bit overwhelming and each of these needs a write up for website, label file made, photos printed for shows, etc. In addition to these wholesale introductions I have a stock pile of my own introductions many of which will see their release this summer. (Including Globba sp. 'Perfect Purple' shown at top of page). Next weeks newsletter will feature rhizomes available for the spring shows and of course through the website. Special discounts for "bulk" packs will be offered as well as other bundle deals. Newsletter subscribers will get an even better deal (so please spread the word to your friends to join!).

So what is coming you ask? Here is just a portion of items I will have good enough numbers to add to the website:

Curcuma hybrids from Sawasdee Series:

Apollo
Carmine Ruby
Cherry Red
Enchantress
Flamingo (though will be late release)
Garnet (not to be confused with 'Thai Garnet' or 'Garnet'
Honeymoon
Maroon Heart
Pink Jewel
Pink Magic
Starlight
Venus

Chadee Series - all four available varieties (White, Coral, Orange, and Magenta).

Curcuma hybrid 'Thai Garnet' will return and a few of its sibling (some Jerry Springer speculation) Sweet Rosy will also be available in much more limited numbers.

The Tulip Gingers!!

Chaing Rai Snow
Cherry Anna (white form)
Cherry Anna (light pink)
Doitung 602
Lanna Snow
Siam Ruby (Curc. sparganifolia red form with dark tips)
Snow White
Solo
Twister
Most of the Siam series varities will still be available as well as the other tulip ginger varities.

Misc Curcuma

sp. "Red Herring" will finally be available!
hyb. 'Golddust'
an addition dozen or two species will be added throughout summer.

That's 29 items, and just one genus. Will cover more next time!

Please help the nursery grow by telling your gardening friends about this newsletter, the website, and facebook group.

As promised, first crack at limited offerings:

Some rhizomes will be available in large numbers so are not at risk of running out and will be featured at all of the spring plant shows we are attending. I have several varieties that are too limited to list on the website and or bring to large events. Some are "jumbo" size rhizomes at regular plant price, others are trial items that I have a few rhizomes of now (and later plants via website), and a few are just rare and may or not make it to website this year.

If you are interested in these it will be on a first come first serve basis. Please e-mail me with your request. Because these are rhizomes they can be held as long as you would like. One can pay for these limited items now and then order other rhizomes in a few weeks and have all sent at once to avoid multiple shipping charges (or to avoid freezing weather!). Each newsletter will feature any remaining items along with new offerings.
(send emails to [email protected])

Upcoming events Talks and Plant Sale Schedule

January 27th - Bluebonnet Library (Baton Rouge). I will be giving a 30 min presentation to the Deep South Koi and Pond Society beginning at 2:30 pm. Their meetings are open to the public. This will be a talk only, no plant sales allowed.

March 9th, 10th Baton Rouge Garden expo at LSU. Located in Parker Coliseum. There are usually a Chili Cookoff and Antique Car show group that hold their events on same weekend outside the main venue.

March 21-24, 2019 Festival of Flowers - Mobile, Alabama. This is a new show for me but quite large with numerous vendors and displays. I will be bringing a huge selection of rhizomes to this 4 day event as well as some growing plants of Butterfly Gingers and others.

April 6th, 7th, 2019 New Orleans Botanic Garden spring plant festival. Located on the garden grounds and featuring plant vendors as well as arts and craft vendors. Usually the largest plant sale/fest in Louisiana.

April 13, 2019 - Festival des Fleurs. - Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, Louisiana.

July 13th, 2019 Mercer Arboretum Tropical Plant Symposium. I will be the keynote speaker and given the time of year probably releasing some new introductions there. Mercer Arboretum has long been a great place to see gingers and although the were hit hard by the flooding in Texas they are bouncing back nicely.

August 5th, 2019 Burden Research Station. I will be giving a presentation on gingers for one of their "lunch and learn" events. More info will be posted later.

August 10th, 2019 New Orleans Botanic Garden. I will be giving a presentation on gingers. More info will be posted later.

probably 4 more spring/early summer plant show/sales will be added on next newsletter in addition to open house schedule and other events.

Regional groups and botanic gardens can contact me ([email protected]) about doing a program.

Sincerely,
Timothy Chapman, Gingerwood Nursery

WOW, thanks for the heads up. I remember ordering from Tim many many years ago. Excellent plants. Now all I need is a garden.

Tim has been around a long time and always has good plants at reasonable prices. Some you can't find anywhere else that I know of. I have already ordered a dozen new ones for the spring.
