I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but I'm asking anyway.

I have my first chicks, and my plants are overtaking my containers - what's the next step? Do I separate the chicks, or do they fall off on their own?
Do they need soil to root in first, before the separation?

I have this problem, especially with the containers I've had for years and years. Some varieties are much more aggressive than others. You can pluck the chicks off and plant them. Fussy ones might want some shade during the middle of the day until they get roots. Non-fussy ones can get stuck right into the ground.

I have some I just toss under the fence and they root. More Honey is one of those.

Thanks, Tabby. Smiling

I just pull them off and set them on the soil, right?

I usually plant part of that stolon that is attached to the chick in order to anchor it.

Also, that's how you end up with nice looking clumps. Let them crowd themselves a bit. Some will play with each other nicely, others will not.

The little red one sitting on top, playing Queen of the Mountain, makes me laugh.

Could the red one be a sport? My S. Speciosum is never red.

I was wondering if it was because it is sitting so high up from the ground. I'll have to go out and see what it is doing today.

Nope, she is still red. I think she is stressed. Look what I did. Blinking
Here she is just a few minutes ago.

Then this. Afterwards I planted her next to the clump so I can watch and see what she does. She was really trying to reach soil.
She looks like a Man O War jelly fish. No stingers though.

What a character...she's pushing so hard to reach soil while turning red for all her efforts. It's so cool to see this.

Kim I think your right, she was holding her breath trying to stretch. I think she will soon start breathing again and go back to green. Whistling
Time will tell.

Sandi funny you should say that.
I am finding tiny seedling all around the beds. I left all the spent bloom stalks from last year in the beds during the winter.
