I was going to post this in the fern forum but noted that no one seems to have posted anything there for a month or more.
I want to mount a birds nest fern like you mount an orchid or bromeliad. I have a tree I can do this in in my greenhouse.
Has anyone ever done it? Is anyone growing one this way? Any pointers?

Last summer, I flipped an old metal candle holder upside down, stuffed it with coir and a little damp sphagnum and placed an Asplenium nidus down into the coir. When we moved back to our home here in Sebastian, a lot of plants got dumped out in the side yard amidst shrubbery and I'd forgotten about this birds nest fern until seeing your post. I went out to look for it, figuring it was probably dead from neglected ... it's a little ratty but I snipped off some broken and browning leaves, watered it and moved it to the screened porch.

That candle holder made a nice container for it. Looking good! That is one I haven't had for years, but should get another one.

Wows and more wows Lin! I'm going to get one this week and mount it like I would a bromeliad in the V of the tree. I'd like to get one of those crazy wild cool ones but they are expensive and until I see if this works well I am just going to get a small cheepo one from the box store

LOL, that's the only kind I've ever had ... the cheapo ones sold at Walmart or Home Depot garden centers. I can never justify spending more than $20 for one single plant and I have to think long and hard before doing so, I'd much rather buy two or three smaller plants for a total of $20. Green Grin!

They have such fabulous Birds Nest Ferns mounted on trees at Selby, when are you heading down that way?

Probably in early April. I have not been to Selby in years, I used to be a member and go down pretty regularly with another friend who has a greenhouse about the size of mine to the member's sales. It really is a stunning place.

This is another Asplenium that I planted in a wire basket about a year ago. I stuffed coir fiber into the bottom of the wire basket to form a bowl shape, sat the rootball with soil down into the "bowl" and put more coir fiber on top.

LOL, the photo shows it better than it actually looks. I am such a neglectful plant person. I cut off a few brown leaves before taking the photo.
