Consider drip feed or soaker hose watering to efficiently keep your soil moist without encouraging foliage diseases. Mulch can increase the effectiveness of these watering methods, feed the plants, protect the roots, and trap soil-borne diseases and pests away from the foliage.

Ya know, soaker hoses don't cost all that much... they're under $12 at my local big box store for a 50' hose, under $10 for a 25' flat hose. I bought several in early spring and placed them in my various islands and then mulched over them. Now when I need to water those islands, I just haul the hose over, attach it to the end of the soaker, and I'm done. Easiest watering I've ever done.
