I have a birthday coming up and I am thinking about a new camera. I'm not a big SLR fan as I don't want a bag full of lenses to mess with. Sony came out with a new Cool Pix Hx100 that looks good to me. I can get it for around $400 at Best Buy. Does anyone have an opinion?

Happy B-Day, Jim.
I would read reviews on your Cool Pix. I would say that when buying a new device.. 1) Are familiar with the controls. 2) What would be your end product, IE web posts, print, etc etc..The more pixels, the larger a shot can be enlarged. 3) Might you want to take the time to learn new, maybe more professional "Bells and Whistles".
Remember, it's the operator not the camera that composes the shot.

I personally use a Nikon D70 and the D5000. 6Mp's and 12.6 MP's respectively. I swap two lenses, a Nikor, DX 18 - 55 and a 55 - 200.
On the 18 - 55, I'll attach a 0.42 X 46 mm Fish eye. On that I'll screw on a ring light. Awesome effect in the eyeballs of subjects and water droplets.
Keep in mind that direction and quality of light, be it natural or artificial can make or break a good pic.

Thanks for the info, Albert. Here are some of the features of the new Sony:
16.1 Megapixel Back-illuminated “Exmor R” CMOS Image Sensor
Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonar T Lens with 27mm equivalent wide angle lens and 30x Optical Zoom
3.0-inch XtraFine LCD
Full HD 1080/60p
Backlight Correction HDR
Hi-speed Linear Focus
3D still images and panorama
High resolution iSweep Panorama mode
Background Defocus

It sounds like a lot of camera for a guy like me.

Sound like a good Cam. Have you used it yet?? Check the focus through out the zoom movement.
I played with one of your pic's Jim. Painting out the wires:

Adobe Photoshop can be purchased online and downloaded the same way. This is the trial link: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/...
In addition to Photoshop, I use Adobe Lightroom. It's more detail oriented, made just for Digi-still's. The difference with this, is that Lightroom allows for individial colour adjustments.

He he, I think my wife ordered the new Sony Cool Pix Hx100 for my birthday. This camera is selling like hotcakes. All of the Best Buy stores in Tampa are out of them and Amazon.com jacked up their prices by at least $50.00. Folks must like it.

That is interesting, soon there will be a camera that takes pictures without clicking the shutter. Voice control maybe...

I still have too much to learn about orchids before I take on learning about photography, too! I used to be pretty good with 35mm, but there is so much to learn about the digital cameras...and Photoshop...I have barely scratched the surface. I used to worry that I would not have enough to do when I retire...that is soooo not true. I now have a long list of things I want to learn and explore that gets longer, especially when I visit this cubit!
