Yep, ants too! They just got one of miniture roses real bad--probably won't live. I put down Terra ant pellets around the outside of my little mini rose garden. They haven't bothered my lily buds this year.

I can't believe ants are eating lily bulbs. They are probably after the sweeter excrement of other insects attacking the bulb(s), like root aphids. It's a common occurrence.

So that's what G.F. Wilson is supposed to look like, Mags. Mine turned out to be another Claude Shride or some such. And it came from our Lily Society sale, too!

Well I really don't see any need for more flower pics, but these are kinda different...

Rick, I find your work with Exotics very intrigueing as I think everyone else does as well. These pictures are so much more deserving than to just get burried in this 'Stripped Bark' thread--Maybe reposting under a separate thread (hint).

You have us all in suspense waiting for the one with the L. Tsingtauense background to open!! Beautiful!!! All Beautiful!!!

Good job! At least you know what you're dealing with ~ and that's a good thing. I'm sill utterly confounded.
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

Lorn, did you use the old standard, peanut butter, for bait?

Goodness, I thought I was posting those lily pics on the June 2012 Lilies thread. We'll get that rectified.

No bait at all, Rick. They usually dive for cover when they see me coming so they're already in their hole. I place the trap face down over the hole. In a couple minutes, they pop their head out to see if I've left, and--well, you know the rest of the story. Gophers are not a real big problem but when one does come it will always dig in the same spot as the previous one--even if its been a couple years.

An interesting side note is I have a large resident female garter snake in this garden--which I appreciate very much. And she trusts her safety around me--been there for years; so, I have to be very carefull of when and how I trap in there.

Russ had turned off the hose to the scarecrow so he could mow, and as he was mowing he saw a woodchuck go into the lilies, pull up a whole one and run with the whole stalk, buds and all in his mouth. He chased him with the mower just for the thrill of it.

Every time I see a woodchuck here I get nervous and hope by gosh it keeps movin'. I don't want 'em--they're not easy to deal with.

They're not. When we first moved here, 23 years ago, my daughter had come home from college, and we had planted a garden. A baby woodchuck came towards her, and Michelle chased it, but instead of running away, it ran right toward her, as if to attack her. I wouldn't doubt this is the same chuck. Wonder what their life expectancy is?

Yikes... if I saw anything with big rat teeth running at me, you can bet we'd be running the same direction.

From Wiki ~
In the wild, groundhogs can live up to six years, with two or three being average. In captivity, groundhogs are reported to live from 9–14 years.

Woodchuck life expectancy isnt long with Russ on the mower.
Inever heard of a chuck taking a whole bulb and plant. We have a chipmonk thats digging up plants. I wish my cat was younger and had more teeth.
Hell I wish I was younger and had more teeth !!
