So.
I have had there 2 Dwarf tree ferns for over 20 years. Before we moved out here in 2003 and I made my greenhouse, I had these in containers as houseplants in the Florida Room in my old house. The one in the first 3 photos I though had died last season. The trunk completely defoliated and fell over. I considered removing it, but decided to leave it for aroids to run over. Imagine my surprise when this spring it has not only leafed out again on the crown, but also started a few new crowns along the trunk!

The second one tried to fall over, but I supported it to keep it upright. I wonder if it would also have grown new crowns if I'd let it go over?

Interesting. I tried growing one at my previous home on a sea island in SC and the cold got to it. I had seen several very well established ones in a garden along the beach 2 hours north but those were likley growing in very sandy well drained soil. I had heavy marshy soil that stayed too damp during the cold months, I think that is what did it in.

That is interesting ... nature is so amazing!

Geesh, it looks like the scientific name of this one changed at some point too and it's now classified as Blinking Dwarf Tree Fern (Oceaniopteris gibba)
