And then on the other side of the spectrum we have the Ionopsis utricularioides.

People have commented on this one that it behaves like an annual in their collection. It did for me....

I could easily imagine a Vanda growing upwards a tree and in the process the lower part would die off as the plant
adds new growth on top and roots along the main-stem to hold on. ( and we scratch our heads why we lost the lower leaves)
One could visualize many creeping Orchids behaving that way.

Carol, 40 years old!!! And how often do you have to divide these?
Very interesting, Ursula, annual orchids.

I divide the biggest Cym every two or three years. The other old one is declining. The epies haven't been repotted in years.

Carol, do these live inside or out most of the year?

They live outside year round. We rarely get freezing temps., so any orchids that are cool growers, or temp. tolerant stay out. Even the few freezing temps. we've had over the years haven't lasted long enough to do any damage to them....so far. Whistling

Lucky Carol. My cool growers are all shoved together in a north light room. Maybe next year I'll use lights.
My Trias cambodiana is in bloom again. What a champ! It has three flowers open since that bud is now open.

Kathy, I need lights too. My warm/intermediate orchids are all suffering in the house. 1 hour of sun in the last few days, and no hope for the rest of the week. I'm afraid this is going to be a looong winter. Indoor temps 65. Humidity "Hi"...won't show anything past 95%. Outdoor temps, 59 and raining for the last three days. Before the rain started, we had heavy fog for a few days. My outdoor orchids may not freeze, but they might rot! I'm suffering from light deprivation too. I know...So. Cal. whiner! I feel bad every time I turn on the news and see what's going on in the rest of the country.

Carol, that sounds like our earlier part of the 2009 Summer. It was the kind of weather only a slug could love....not a good thing.
