Here's a group shot from a week or so ago, before I added a layer of sand mulch on the little planters that didn't have it.

Thumb of 2012-06-28/critterologist/d05930

This is the die-back or browning of the lower leaves that I realized was only happening on plants whose leaves were in contact with the potting soil.
When I added the sand around these, I was careful to keep whatever bit of root or stub or stolon they had in contact with the potting soil so they could root in.

'Krebs 2', which looked perfect when it arrived from Santa Rosa!

Here's 'Sopa' from Lynn, which still looks perfect (had the sand mulch since planting) but hasn't rooted one little bit yet. Its center is in contact with the potting mix.

Thumb of 2012-06-28/critterologist/54486e

I see a lot of people potting up initially in little 2 or 4 inch pots instead of in the small dollar store planters that I used... Am I just giving them too much space? (Those are my 2 year old daughter's crocs in that first photo -- the planters really aren't very big LOL)

Your planters look good, Jill.

Krebs 2- sometimes when a new plant adjusts to new growing conditions this can happen.
It may not be you, but some insult the plant suffered before you got it.
When a new plant arrives I always water in thoroughly and mist every other day for the first week or 2.

You will be able to tell when the plant is happy by its color and the way the leaves lie.

Lynn will know better than I.

Is there a photo of the seedlings you had the question about?

The seedlings weren't my question. I was concerned that my new starts didn't have new roots yet.

Sounds like I do need to keep the potting mix moist then while they root in -- just like any other plant, Rolling my eyes.

If I am trying to root a very small offset, then I will mist daily for the first few weeks, as they can lose moisture and don't have that much to lose.

If it is an established rosette or clump, then I want it to remain on the dry side until all possible injuries have had a chance to heal. So I would mist those as well for a few weeks or just let them remain dry.

Climates and conditions can vary, but I am always cautious with transplants or new arrivals, as there is the potential for rot due to hidden damage.

Thanks! I'll start giving those pretty starts from Lynn a daily spritz or two with the hose when I'm watering.

They will do great for you Jill, with all that loving care you are giving them. I always stress some over the new semps I plant, that first year can be difficult, but once established they pretty much take care of themselves. I have 3 new raised beds to baby sit this growing season. I'll be putting up the shade cloth on those beds to make sure they don't get to stressed this first year.
