Ursula, I was just wondering......what temps do you keep the greenhouse at, day and night?

I have set the minimum temp at night to 60 degr F, ramping up to maximum temp of 70 degr F at around noon time. The exhaust fan will kick in around ca 82 degr F.
It is much tougher to keep the greenhouse cool in Summer than it is to heat in Winter.

Thank you, Ursula! I guess my orchids are freezing in the daytime. The rooms they are in gets to about 63 days and 58 nights.

This would be fine for intermediate orchids but too low for vandas and other warmth lovers. Also, most orchids need a temperature differential to bloom. In this article they say 10 degrees.

I try to remember that if I am chilly in the greenhouse, so are my warm growers. Makes sense?

I guess I'd better get a 'high/ low thermometer, I have no idea what the temperature is during the night. Confused

My warm room doesn't get lower than 60 and sometimes in winter I don't get a 10 degree differential. But sometimes I place the plants I'm urging on nearby the cold windows to get the temp diff to be greater. My vandas, on the other hand, often move away from the windows. I also decide to move slow movers from the cool room into the warm and vice versa to keep blooms longer. But I read up on which ones will are temp tolerate and do it in stages. I moved the vanda coerulea to the cool yesterday after a stay in an intermediate area. This probably is why we get better at this stuff with more experience. Sometimes I wish I could stick to one alliance but I'd be too bored!

You will always have some spots with a micro climate, where ever you grow your plants.
Although my thermostat is set to a certain temperature, I still have a cooler spot in front of the greenhouse door which is facing North. I take advantage of that and use it for those Orchids which need to be kept a few degrees cooler at night and still sit in the sun at day time. ( like Neofinetia falcata, and now Dendrobium kingianum.)

Since I'm using our sunroom as temporary quarters, it is minimally insulated and I put an
electric heater in there that's either on or off. It is comfortable for me to sit and read the paper
during the day, but I have no idea what goes on in there at night! I'm thinking just to be safe
that I should move the few little vanda type plants that I've got to a more heated spot at night.

Yes, thanks, Ursula. My Paphs did well under these conditions last winter. But I didn't have all these others then. So I am giving them a little more warmth days. After all, most are tropical, right?

Yes, that applies - unless they grow at some altitude...
One can always shift them around until they are happy.
