Why isn't there a dahlia forum? The only problem with dahlias is that growing them gets ADDICTIVE (especially when you learn to divide and store last year's plants) I guess there can be a "Dahlias Anonymous" forum, too... "I have no control over buying the newest dahlias"...
I have planted my largest dahlia garden to date. At last count, I had 65 in the ground (not counting the border dahlias I grew from seed, plus the border dahlias I bought for the dark foliage....
I hope, in the fall, to have tubers to trade/sell!
Any dahlia lovers out there?

I love Dahlias and just getting back into growing them. I potted some this year since my gardens are filled with other perennials, but will be saving them this year in hopes to plant in the ground in a new bed next year. Would be interested in trading when I see which ones I will have in the fall.

The only reason there isn't a dahlia forum is because there hasn't been enough interest yet.
We like to wait until there is a large demand for a new forum before we create it so that all of our forums are well used.

The [url=http://garden.org/forums/view/perennials/]perennial forum[url] would be a great place to get started! There are a lot of dahlia lovers out there (I'm getting my own little collection started as well! You are right- they are addictive!)

I love dahlias! Can't grow them worth a darn, but I keep trying. Bet if there was a dahlia forum, there'd be lots of interest in it. You know, care and feeding and maintenance and ways to keep the darn things from turning to mush over the winter..... Hilarious!

I take it that dahlias are perennial in Texas?
My father used to leave the tubers in the ground out in B.C. on the coast.
Here we must dig them up in the fall.

I managed to overwinter one once. In a pot on the back porch. Of course, the ones I REALLY wanted to keep turned into soup.

No, I still have to dig them up, unfortunately. I'm currently classifying them as "worth the trouble" though, and that says a lot! I don't mess with many plants that I have to baby or dig up!

I leave mine in the ground all year. I have the tubers in pretty deep and mulch heavily in the winter. Never had a problem loosing them. I guess they like here. Smiling

That's funny, since you and Trish seem to be in the same climate zone. So much for zones, eh? Whistling

Texas and Oregon are two different planets. Shows that zones should be taken with a grain of salt. Rolling my eyes.
