Hi,
I have this growing in my west garden. I'm not sure if this is some sort of weed or what. I was thinking Mexican Petunia but not sure. The plant has not bloomed of yet. Does anyone know what this is?Thumb of 2012-06-08/floweringdelights/807e69

Hi fd, Welcome!

Could you be more specific where your west garden is?

Ruellia brittoniana does look a good bet, I can see it has the same leaf venation ..

I agree with Ruellia brittoniana. If it is Ruellia, depending on where you're located, it's either a "feed", or as in my area, an aggressive self-seeding perennial (annual north) even if it is a Texas Superstar (dwarf form 'Katie' only). The species gets about 3'-4' and has underground runners and well as seeds. The dwarf 'Katie' (1'-2') puts all her effort into setting seeds and spewing them everywhere.

As Monica says, it depends upon where you are. Your profile doesn't include a location, are you in Canada? Mexico? Ruellia is an invasive weed here in Florida too, but further north it's widely used as a wonderful perennial.

Hi!
Thanks JRsb. I agree This plant is growing in my west garden in the New Orleans area. I'm zone 9b. Thanks for providing the link as well!
gingin, thanks!
kranc,
I think this may be the dwarf version Mexican petunia. I will keep my eyes out for sure with invasiveness of this plant. Rolling my eyes.
Hi dyzz,
I just completed the right section under my profile, thanks to yall. Since I'm new here, I am slowly learning my way around. Great site!

I agree with Ruellia brittoniana. I'm betting in N.O. it's invasive like it is in Fl.

And Welcome! to the site!

I know you're still learning your way around so don't take this the wrong way okay? When an ID is made sufficient to suit the satisfaction of the original poster then we mark the thread as closed or "done". You will see an option for doing that both at the top of the thread and near the bottom when you go to make a reply. Only the op can mark it as done as the rest of us don't see the option on our screens. Now, however, if you aren't sure the plant is what we think then by all means leave the thread open! It's perfectly fine to do that & wait until the plant blooms so you can be sure. Green Grin!

Hi flaf,
Thanks for the heads up! I welcome all the help I can get. Smiling Good to know about keeping a thread open vs. closing a thread. I would agree my plant in question is Ruellia brittoniana. I think I will keep the thread open until I see blooms. I'll post pics hopefully when I see those blooms! Smiling Thanks again!
