So pretty! I I didn't even know about yellow salvias until I looked at them online at FBTS.

Yeah they are fun to grow and are fully winter hardy in our heat zone.

Love it and green with envy!

I ordered the yellow S. glutinosa from FBTS last fall for this spring. Alas, when the shipment arrived it was marked out of stock. I was sorely disappointed ☹️

I'd love your S. koyamae, but it's described as "shade- and moisture-loving herbaceous perennial that is perfect for woodland gardens or shady borders." I'd be courting failure trying those. Big sigh.

Came upon this article about yellow salvias on FBTS that I've never noticed before. Interesting.

Meanwhile, some of my heat lovers are enjoying the autumn sun

I had a tree removed from the garden this summer. The Salvia koyamae appears to not be affected by the sudden sun exposure. I hope it continues. Glutinosa is enjoying the extra sun as is guaranitica. The difference in their health post tree removal is truly like night and day difference.

Joseph, I confess to knowing little about Delaware, but I'd guess you have a strong coastal influence...? Our sun and aridity are pretty intense. The heat tolerance was why I wanted glutinosa.

If my glutinosa plant expands, I can try to split it for you, Zoë.

Thanks, Joseph. I could always try seeds. My space is quite limited for serious seed-starting but not impossible. Online plant prices are getting out of control. I was searching for a hellebore a while back and could only find what I wanted in a gallon pot for...$35. YIKES. No way.

I think this trend of expensive plants online will continue. That's why I am going to try to extend my seed starting capacities inside. Outrageous prices everywhere I look. I love the salvias at FBTS, but it would cost more to ship it here than the price of the plant! I like to stick to nurseries closer to home to avoid those high shipping prices.

I decided to install my Salvia oxyphora and S. penstemonoides in the garden. I mulched with leaves and will see how they survive the winter.

Let's hope for a old winter! NOAA says it will be dryer and warmer here, but I can't say as I believe them. Thinking

Joseph, when is your first average frost date? I have four new plants in 3" pots and have been debating ground vs one-gallon pots in a protected space. Ive leaning towards protection because I don't think there is time for the roots to establish enough for winter in the soil.

Que sera sera, I can't store the plants indoors so outside they stayed. Survival is better when roots are in the ground instead of in a container so let's see what happens.

That might be a good strategy for small plants. My plants were well established container plants with strong root systems so I am hopeful for survival.

Our first frost date is in mid-October and we had a mild frost already. When does freezing cold occur in your area?

Normally about now, but hasn't happened yet. It's been so beautiful that I've been lazy about winter prep. Might freeze in about a week, according to forecast. One off my new babies is blooming in its tiny pot

We are on schedule, according to our local weatherman. Temps much in line with what they were last year. I've carried over small perennials in pots outside many times, I just back the pots up against the south side of the house, in between two large nandinas to protect from the wind. The sun is lower in the winter, so they get plenty of sunshine. In case the nighttime temps get below 25 or so, I cover with leaves or fleece blankets.
