You know I can't resist a new tree when I visit the nursery that has the BEST selection, Maas Nursery Seabrook, TX. A variegated JM will be pink around the edges this fall. This can take some sun so that is very good for our hot area. Kagiri Nashiki.

I like those 'August Moon' & 'Autumn Moon' maples, but apparently they don't like it much, growing (or, rather do not?) here... I like to try & grow my own "new varieties" from seeds.collected from laceleaf varieties. I think those, are actually newer, than what you may consider to be as "new"..
That's great though, if you can get a variegated one, to grow happily in some direct sun, in warmer areas. The Japanese do tend to like to grow unusual variegated plants, of just about anything from Hakone grasses, to morning glories ( of course maples) & even cacti.

I've moved it from the late afternoon sun area to morning sun. Will see how that works first. Even our morning sun tends to be fairly strong in the summer. It was growing in shade at the nursery. I have one perfect area of mottled late sun. But a Coral Bark JM is there now.

That's probably a good idea to move into some afternoon shade. I've enjoyed growing quite a few over the years & after they get older & in ground, aren't really so easily moved.
I left behind a 'Crimson Queen' & it had really just started to grow well. My first one, I had my dad bring back from Japan, in the early 70's when it wasn't such a n ordeal, going through the airport. It was in his suit case !

Yeah. Even the JMs who "need" sun don't like our Texas sun. At some point when the lows at night are 80ยบ They all go into the shade which is the reason mine stay in pots and never get as tall as they should. My purpose aside from loving these trees, is to have a mid-story in the yard. We have tall tall oaks, pines and elms. While I have a nice under story of shade foliage and a few flowers, everything at eye level is pretty much all trunk.
