What I mean is the search terms like amoena, bicolor, variegata, etc. Is there a dictionary somewhere?

That is actually a really good question. I am not sure there is a full one anywhere.

Some of the types are defined by the AIS under Color Classes/Patterns: http://wiki.irises.org/Main/In...
You have to click on each pattern type to go to the page with the definition. It is missing ones such as Emma Cooks though.

Hopefully there is a better pattern guide that someone can give a link for.

For example, I may want to search for an unknown iris with lavendar standards and mixed tan, yellow, greenish falls, When I go to the search database for irises it asks abouta lot of things that I don't know how to define.

While there is no official definition of any of those terms, the way they are used in the Irises Database is fairly well described here:

Sharon, have you actually seen the one you are describing? Or is it a hypothetical desired iris? I'm not sure whether that would be considered as a bicolor or as a blend.

That was a very well thought out article. I'd never become familar with all those names & considered "self" as in pollination, that it was "self, pollinated, or simply sellfed. Instead, I use the term "solid "& instead if bitone, 'use bicolor". & have seen two tone, used ..As for lines, I refer to as veining.... I was familar with plicata & a few others...Thank you , Kent , for the educational page, with illustrations, that I'm sure requires knowledge, to help disseminate it & appreciate the efforts you put into that..

Yes it is real. It bloomed this year but I didn't take a picture.

I think I have found it! Was also considering What Again, but this one looks closer!

I see it is classified as a bicolor.
