I found this very distinctive plant as I cycled past, struck by its very strong smell - lily/musky/slightly obnoxious smell!

Looks like a lily. Maybe Lilium pyrenaicum?

That is a Lily but I can't tell you which one. Zencat's suggestion seems promising.

It is a species lily and L. pyrenaicum looks like a possibility. I don't know if it exudes an unpleasant odor.

Lilium superbum; at least that what the strongly recurved petals suggest... adding this - I was too quick looking at the images. I believe the responses ID'd it correctly: Lilium pyrenaicum.

Thanks so much, what a great forum - Lilium Pyrenaicum looks to be it. Interesting to read about - originated in the Pyrenees, and the smell can give strongly polarised views of it!

L. Pyrenacium for sure. Very nice clump of it too! I recall hearing the fragrance from it was not real pleasant.
