I bought a pot of tree peony from a vendor a month ago. But it grows not well from the 1st day. Pot drainage looks not good. I know usually people recommend moving tree peony in fall. But in this case, could I move it to ground? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Amy. Welcome to the forum! You can transplant potted Peonies, regardless of variety, pretty much any time. If the soil it's in is poor you'll want to remove it though so you'll do some damage to the roots. Tree Peonies should be planted much deeper than herbaceous as most are grafted to herbaceous roots, keeps the herbaceous growth from sprouting. An alternative would be to keep it in the pot for a few more months but keep it in a shady spot, your problem is probably just as much the roots getting too hot as the soil. Even if you decide to plant it out now I'd give it more shade for a few weeks to give it Recovery time

My thoughts would be, as long as it is finished flowering, if it did. Flowering and root development on a newly planted peony may be stressful. Give those roots plenty of room by digging wide and deep. Good luck!

I have 4 tree peonies in pots right now that I'm waiting to plant in the Fall. I'm being very careful not to overwater them to avoid root rot.
LG - My garden grows with love and a lot of hard work.
