Dave I am having some mixed results when searching by Characteristics in the sempervivum part of the database.
When I type in Kevin Vaughn it only gives me a few entries. If I type in just Kevin it will give me more entries. Still not sure if it is the complete list. The problem with just using the first name is that there is more than one person with the same first name, that has named plants in the database. He/she would have a different last name however.

How is it that it won't give me the entire list for a complete name of the hybridizer?

If I type in Betty Bronow or Betty Z Bronow, it comes up with nothing. If I type just Betty in 24.

Maybe it would work better if you just used the hybridizer's surname, Lynn.

Bronow does come up with 25 if I just type in the surname. But how are new comers going to know what to type in?
I knew there were more in our database than what was coming up in a search, so I kept trying different ways. But most people will just assume that is all there is or there are none.

There might be a need to post some tips on searching for newcomers (and for the rest of us too, for that matter). For instance, most people don't know that the inclusion of a hyphen in the search term totally messes up the search.

How many semp Hybridizers are there Lynn?

Was thinking of a dropdown box of Hybridizers names to choose from. Then typing or misspelling the names would not be an issue.

Also have that in the database entry page.

There are many. A whole lot. Bunches. That would be a lot of drop downs. I had thought about that until I realized how many there is.
And more are starting up again. We went for a very long time with only a few in Europe working at hybridizing. Looks like we now have some new comers starting up.

I don't know if it can be done,
but if you type the first letter of the last name, and then a dropdown box appears, containing all the Hybridizer names beginning with that letter. Then you choose from those.

Just a thought.

Dropdowns and autocomplete isn't going to work on these text fields. Searching on a text field is something one must know is going to sometimes require multiple tries to find what you're looking for. When searching for a hybridizer, I'd suggest searching on just their last name.

If their name is present in multiple formats (middle initial, etc) then it would be nice to try to find those and standardize them all to show the same exact name for the benefit of future searches.

It would be nice if all custom DB were set up with same standardization.

How about multiple names: ex.
Siberian Iris - Marty Schafer/Jan Sacks
Japanese Iris - Bob Bauer and John Coble

Does the database point to the Daylilysearch feature?

If I search for Halloween Costume by Maryott in the db, it shows. But if I do a search for Maryott in the DL search program, it doesn't show.

I've had the same problem when searching for daylilies by the same hybridizer. I was looking for all the Munson daylilies/ I typed in Munson. And only got back some of his daylilies. I tried the same thing over at Tinker's and it came back with 1061 Munson cultivers.

Is that information filled in for the missing cultivars? That might be the problem.

They are there but the search by characteristics limits the results by the first 100 results found.

Lynn, just click on the Plants Database link in the menubar at the top, then look on the right side of the top of that page and you'll see a window that says "Visit our custom databases:" - scroll down that little window there for the full list of all the custom databases you can visit.
