Almost 100% of the locally purchased roses this year for me have had some nasty leaves on them. They've been losing all their leaves, leaving only extreme bare canes. I been feeding them extra with Age Old Kelp & trimmed the canes down, and have been rewarded with brand new leaves that look perfect.

However, on these two roses (one's Memorial Day, the other is a Sterling Silver), this is what the leaves originally looked like.


I know it's not blackspot. Is it just extreme dryness?

I'm not sure about the first one, but the second one looks like fertilizer burn. Someone overfertilized that rose before you bought it.

I would guess fertilizer on the leaves in bright sunlight. Or in too hot a greenhouse. Considering much of the country warmed up too early this spring, feeding schedules probably did not take into account the unexpected warm temps.
It's hard for us to keep plants fed properly when temps don't fall below 90 for weeks at a time. That may be what happened to the roses.
Just a guess. Roses around here look like the pic on the left quite often, and I see workers spraying the plants with water still connected to the fertilizer pump.

ok, then it's definitely NOT something I've done as I am usually pretty careful not to let the fertilizer be actually on the plant, but on the mulch underneath. Makes for a shit-load of cuts all over my hands/arms, but it's well worth it then. I'm gonna say that over 90% of the roses I saw at HD were all suffering from that. That's one of the main reasons why I didn't buy hardly anything this year.
