Thread OP

Does anyone know what is happening to my soil. I am
attaching a pic. This is all over the place and has
overtaken a garden bed that I water almost daily.

Thank you!

What dies it look like before? Almost looks like worm castings which should be a good thing.

I'm afraid I'm not see what it is you are concerned about. The photo seems to show you holding dry dirt. I don't see anything else. When you say you water almost daily, how deeply are you watering? One shouldn't have to water that often. What are the other symptoms? Are the plants becoming stressed? What has the weather been like?

It sort of looks like what a bad infestation of pill bugs will leave as telltale evidence. I see little rolls of dirt (or whatever) like this a lot in my side yard garden. It is very damp due to heavy shade and I have been fighting pill bugs there ever since I bought this house. I would put some Spectracide (which works) out to kill them but my 16 yr. old little rat terrier is very sensitive to insecticides. When she passes on, I will go after them diligently, however. Until then, I just put up with them as their lifestyle/eating habits add some nutrients back to the soil. You say you are watering daily, you may be keeping the soil so damp you are encouraging them? But if you have pill bugs bad in an area, you will see the rolled-up little crustaceans under/in flower pots, on dead wood and rotting vegetation and such.

I am finding the same thing in my garden! I was wondering if it was worm castings. I found it by my lilies which got infested with red lily beetles really awful (never saw them before this season either) so I wondered if it was castings from the beetles. Now I see it in several other places in my gardens. Hoping it is good for the garden and not evil for the garden from some pest.

I sure could be worm castings, GGPink. They look similar. If you don't find a lot of pill bugs, then it's probably worm castings. I have lots of earthworms in my very damp garden, but I also have lots of visible pill bugs. In my case, it could be either.

I never thought about pill bugs. I do see a lot of earthworms this year. At least they are beneficial!
