Well, I just convinced my friend in Minneapolis to buy this lovely plant. We put it in a raised bed planter that's very fast-draining.

Although the tag said hardy to Zone 4, I'm wondering what growers in cold climates do to protect an in-ground semp - is any particular protection needed for the 6+ months of winter? Should she pot it up and keep it inside for the winter, put one of those styrofoam cones over it, or just leave it be? I'd hate to think I've talked her into a rather expensive annual Crying

What does this zone 5 grower do to protect his Silverine during the winter months? Absolutely nothing! It is in a pot and not in the ground. In the ground is an easier situation than in a pot, so you should be OK. Hopefully the situation will provide snow cover, and they love snow cover. You've probably just helped to create another sempaholic. Hurray!

I tip my hat to you. Thanks so much. Actually I was the one drooling over it and was planning to "liberate" a little rosette to take home with me. Whistling

No one has luck with these in my hot, humid climate so I want to give it a try. From another post, I'll follow your advice about pea gravel and keeping it out of our often torrential rains.

I'm in zone 4 and snow cover is a good thing. Sometimes I'll move my pots up against the house for the winter, but not always.

Just returned to Texas yesterday. The photo is from phone camera so not the best.

And I didn't have time to "liberate" any of it, so hoping my friend remembers to send me a piece.
