Snakes
I wish I had a camera, because I think a photo would be more helpful than words.

My front door is shady in the morning and bakes like a desert in the afternoon sun. The stairs are not poured cement. Instead, someone managed to move huge cement (possibly cut stone, but I think they are cement) blocks into place. The blocks are not the same size, length, or depth and they don't match up on either end. There is no matching up one side to line up with the other. The patio portion is slab stone that needs resetting, but I'm not physically able to do. On top of all of it, we rent. Landlord couldn't give a rip. I dream of being able to afford a trellis to cover the entrance all in vines, and reduce the heat that pours in, but the custom made trellis estimate is over a thousand. It ain't happening. Currently, I have full length curtains hanging in front of the door that help reduce the heat coming in, but I'd like it if I could find a way to have nature do the job for me.

I made a make shift trellis against the outside wall of the house, which is exposed to hot sun, and planted a honeysuckle vine inside a planter as there is no access to the ground. The honeysuckle seems to be both doing well, and not doing well. It is blooming like crazy, but the leaves get mildew, turn yellow and die. I suspect, my trellis is too close to the house and there is not enough air flow.

I have these vines available from other places in my yard:
Dutchmen's pipe..
Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose.
Kiwi,
Interlaken grape
a thornless blackberry
Hops
Black eyed Susan.
Star Jasmine

So, I have plenty of existing vines to chose from, should I want to swap things out. But I'm wondering if there is something else that might work even better. I like Blue Crown Passion Flower, Cup and Saucer, and Hyacinth Vine and wonder if any of them might work.

What handles the given conditions? Hot and humid? The entrance has its own zone, different from the rest of the yard, but I couldn't say for sure what it is. I would say the planting season is about a month earlier, and lasts about a month longer than the rest of the yard.

I plan to continue to find a way to trellis in this space affordably. I'm wondering, when that happens, are the vines happy shading their own roots (which is what I hope will happen.)

My goal is deep shade for the door entrance. My experience with the honeysuckle and star jasmine is, a little smell goes a long way. I'm hoping for a vine that can handle the abuse, that isn't overly fragrant, but right now, I'd settle for survival.

Suggestions?
