Nice choice!
It will do best if you can plant it in the ground in full sun, but where the ground tends to stay wet. The wild ancestors are bog plants that can grow in swamps with cattails. You don't list your climate zone, but if you live where the ground freezes, the roots may get too cold in an above ground pot. It will be the last plant to come out of dormancy in the Spring, so leave at least 6 - 8" of dead stem over winter, so you know where it is supposed to come back up.
