Dog mosaics are so cool! I really would love to be able to do one well. Several of my friends are specializing in dog portrait mosaics and doing very well.

Karen, I love the lantern idea with the cardinal. Very pretty, also the pet pics are nice too. I took one stain class locally and the lady/owner also does pets in stained glass!

I love using stained glass shards for mosaics. They look beautiful with light shining through. What did you make in your class? Was it copper foiling stained glass or the mosaics?

Copper foiled suncatchers. I wonder if I could buy shards from her for a mosaic?? Light bulb moment Smiling

Yes, most glass shops sell shards by the pound. That's how I first started, but I bought my shards on Ebay.

So I'm also wondering about the durability of the bowling ball mosaics. My mom has received a number of garden mosaic stepping stones over the years. She never walked on them but left them out as art. It never took more than 3-4 years for pieces to fall out or for the matrix to crack. Could be a materials thing so I thought I'd ask. We get around 45 inches of rain a year and summer is HOT. Not Arizona hot but still too hot for me!
Always looking for interesting plants for pollinators and food! Bonus points for highly, and pleasantly scented plants.

@UrbanWild, I have a lot of mosaics that have been outside for years. One is on my husband's astronomical observatory. One is a fish pond mosaic on my deck. I have little lizards crawling around our outside walls. Most have been there for 8 years now. I also have patio tables that are just fine with nothing peeling off. I haven't done many stepping stones.

I use Loctite polyseamseal Clear Caulk to use as an adhesive. I grout normally with sanded grout. I don't seal the work since most seals do not work.

The amount of rain might be the problem there. We only have 10 to 12 inches of rain a year here in NM. The mosaics seem to be ok even in AZ. I have a pool equipment box that has all 4 sides mosaicked, and it's been out there for about 10 years.

Hi, Karen
I would love to see pictures of your art pieces. Please post more mosaic bowling balls too. I am feeling artsy and want to get a couple things done and in the garden!

One project I want to complete is a Farmer's Daughter barn quilt back yard sized. I have one on the big barn but want to make a 2x2 for the storage shed.

Unfortunately, I've only made one bowling ball. I did it with one design, and didn't care for it, so I tore it up and did the blue design. You can see some of my other art pieces here.

You can buy the metal lizards in Lowe's or Home Depot. They can be decorated up very easily, and put on the walls or the trees in the garden.

ohhh, I love the little lizards! The others pieces are nice too. My next project is doing a small barn quilt for my storage building. I want a she shed lol. I have picked out the quilt pattern Farmer's Daughter to honor and remember my Dad.

Yes, I did a 4x4 several years ago and put sealer on. It is beginning to fade after 4 yrs but still pretty.
