I do not know, but I suspect it may have been seed grown. I bought it at a plant sale at one of the botanical gardens here.

These look like Mammillaria karwinskiana subsp nejapensis and both appear to be developing two growing points or dividing into two barrels. I have one doing that, but I purchased a second one this winter that only has the single eye at the top. I was curious to watch and compare the two as they develop.

I discovered a huge infestation of mealies on my heyderii today..
Im really not in the mood...at least its a pest i can control.
I sprayed it, now ill check the roots. Ive unpotted and removed some of the soil near the base(likely not afflicted, but doesnt hurt to check to be safe..)
Ill also pot it a bit higher and more exposed. With better soil this time.

That is how they grow with very little of it sticking above the surface.... really easy to miss these in the wild.

I got the Mammillaria heyderi ssp hemisphaerica that was collected off the property here potted up yesterday. And it rained last night. I think it should be okay. It had gotten pretty dry from the time it was dug to planting yesterday. In any case, it looked refreshed this morning after the rain.

Thanks. It's tedious sometimes, so it could probably be done just as successfully without being so neat. Wish I was neat on some other things Shrug! . Have to set priorities, though.

As promised in the COVID19 diversion thread some flowering Mammillarias:

Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii. Both my big ones ended up not making it, but this crammed together community pot has a new one in it. I probably going to split this pot up soon:
Thumb of 2020-03-22/mcvansoest/c8b2c8

I have already shown this one in flower a few times, but it keeps putting out beautiful big flowers, M. melanocentra:
Thumb of 2020-03-22/mcvansoest/9453ac

A sparsely flowered 'crown', on this Mammillaria of which I know but do not remember the ID:
Thumb of 2020-03-22/mcvansoest/1e8192

The pot with the same but different color flowered Mammillarias, showing another attempt at making a nice flower crown:
Thumb of 2020-03-22/mcvansoest/982510

And this M. spinosissima, what used to be 'un pico' is closest to having a complete crown of open flowers, it may make it:

Hey Gang,
Taking a break from the news. Rolling my eyes. The weather is nice here. A warm day with lots of mixed sun and clouds. I decided to get out a little bit and pull a few random weeds and just check on the garden while it is still mine. (I think I told you all I sold the house and am moving....still staying here in the same town; just going a few miles away to new house and subdivision) Anyhow...here's what's new.

The blooms on these mamms are just taking off and starting to look really special. Thumbs up They're in a pot so they can come with me.

This little guy is staying. Sad I can't take them all with me, but I am still enjoying watching him bloom.

Thumb of 2020-03-22/AgaveGirl1/a13f99

The trichocereus grandiflorus has been getting ready to fire up the flower factory. I will really, really miss this plant, but I am glad I will be here to see it within bloom the next few days.

Not exactly mammillaria I know but they are flowers and quite pretty. With these stressful times right now I figured we could all use a break for a few seconds to enjoy something beautiful. A small reminder that nature finds a way to persevere in spite of the chaos going on around us. Angel As long as I 'see' this for some reason---some how, some way we will be o.k.

Mammillaria spinosissima 'un pico' - the one major branch of the clump still showing 'un pico' spine behavior with an almost full crown of open flowers, you many notice that some of the spines are trying to be a little hooked at the ends:

I was told my matudae was blooming a lot more today.
The mammillaria prolifera, which i sent to the stash, was also blooming...
Otherwise none of the other was doing anything like that at the time. I think the bombycina was in a growth spurt. Im curious. Was hesitant to get one: mammillaria mystax.
What can you tell me, how does it compare to most mams(polyethele, mue-pfordtii, heyderi etc)?

It is in a hanging basket off the west edge of my back porch so it gets afternoon sun, as we move to summer it will probably get moved to the north side to only get early morning and late afternoon sun, but we will see how it takes the increased sun strength the coming weeks/months.
