Anyone recognize what this plant is? A friend took the shot while on a hike.

Either No. Calif. or Oregon, I didn't get a chance to ask and she won't be online for a while. So I doubt it's the ginger anyway, they are tropical. Those look like a berry of some kind.

I was going to ask if they're berries, or blue flowers that just haven't opened yet? Can't really tell because the pic is a bit blurry. Looks more like a flower scape to me. The blue ginger - dichorisandra - is actually in the spiderwort family so it's more hardy than the tropical gingers. Spiderworts do grow up there (I am from BC originally). My pic is a start of a blue ginger I got from a friend, foliage is similar to your pic.

Not many berries that are that blue, except blueberries, of course. Foliage is wrong for wild blueberry or huckleberry. Not Oregon grape, either.

Call your friend and tell her to go on that hike again so she can get another picture??

I have come across this before, and really wanted it! I couldn't remember the name, but a little selective searching brought up the one I wanted which is Clintonia andrewsiana. Does it fit?

Fruit, if it is fruit, looks like porcelain berry. Can't tell if leaves in pic belong with fruit.

I think you are on the money Janet. It is native to California and Oregon.

I don't think it can be anything else Jay, there's not many Clintonia. The other one in the area is Clintonia uniflora which has only one flower and berry per stem.

Good links, Sue!

I lived in Northern California for a couple of decades.
Loved it.
