Thread OP

My seedlings are now 5 months and they have grown well. The are grown on my balcony here in Turkey. Now the Winter is coming and I am keeping them in an aquarium to shelter them from hard wind and rain. I have a heatingpad for colder nights. But the roots are starting to come out of pots. Should I cut them off if they get to long?

as winter approaches - would leave the roots above the surface alone .... cutting anything now, will put your plants at risk

if you do not want to see the roots ....cover the roots with a layer of coarse sand

If it gets to, or below freezing where you are in Turkey - a heating pad & aquarium will not be sufficient, if the plants is left outdoors

When night temperatures fall to 50°F (10°C) - it is time to move Adenium indoors

Provide as much sunlight as possible near a south facing window - or - place the plant in a well lit room - Grow lights are an effective alternative

Temperatures around 45°F (7°C) will stunt next year's growth - Branch tips may be damaged, however the plant will survive -
prolonged exposure below 40°F (4°C) will cause serious damage -
Freezing temperatures or frost will kill the plant -

I live in the South so it never gets below freezing and seldom below 10 C at night. The roots come out from the bottom of the pot. I suppose I have to keep them dry. Should I stop watering them even if I can keep them over 15 C?

as your local temperatures fall to around 50° ....adeniums begin dormancy (where growth ceases)....as plants enter this phase, they require far less water ....so you want to cut back your watering scheduled ....over-watering will cause root rot

I would suggest you repot the plant with roots coming out of the bottom into a slightly bigger pot

Should I water them before replanting so that I don`t damage ther roots too much? I think nearly all of them have roots coming out of the bottom. Its still rather warm but its getting cooler in early mornings, about 68 F. I have fertilized lava pebbles but they wouldn`t be suitable this time of year I guess. Should I use the seedling mixture I used before? Thank You!

how tall are your plants ?

I would not water before moving plants from one pot to another ..... for two reasons, one if watered might have a mess as the root ball will fall apart ....and two will be easier to move if kept intact dry ....also know - adenium are pretty tough plants -

wait to water a day or so after repotting ....

you can use the seedling mixture - but I suggest you add rocks & pebbles for a chunkier, faster draining mix

as your plants get bigger you will want to use a grittier chunkier mix - the faster the soil drains away water, the better off your plants will be

it is still over 90° where I live, and nights are in the low 70's ..... as long as it is still hot outside I will continue watering thoroughly with 3 to 4 passes once every 7 days (or so) ....if any rain falls on the plants, I consider that a "watering day" regardless of the amount of rain .....

the day before the predicted nighttime low is to be 50 or below - I will water thoroughly with 3 to 4 passes one last time ..... the next watering in 60 to 75 days

Shouldn`t I water them at all even though I have a heating pad under them?

You want your adenium plants to enter dormancy ....you do not want to stop or prolong it .....

During dormancy your adenium will essentially stop growing, and during dormancy will require far less water and more importantly, far less heat ....

heating pads might help during cold nights ... but are not really needed - as long as the plants are protected from freezing temperatures -
