Seems there is some confusion as to the correct spelling and we have databases for both, many of them duplicates.

http://garden.org/plants/brows...

This was an interesting read from the Plant Delights site, link below but I'll quote the section found toward the bottom about the two names:
http://www.plantdelights.com/B...

"An alternate spelling for Buddleia is "buddleja", and like a good mystery novel, the nomenclatural plot thickens. Reportedly, British surgeon and botanist Dr. William Houstoun (1695-1733), in his Catalogus plantarum Horti regii parisiensis, first spelled the name "Buddleia". Carl Linnaeus then reportedly misspelled it in the taxonomic bible, Species Plantarum as both "buddleja" in the text and "budleja" in the index. In a later edition of Houstoun's work, published by Sir Joseph Banks in 1781, three different spellings can be found: buddleja, buddleia, and buddlea. Many taxonomists also consider the name buddleja to have been misspelled, because according to the rules of Latin; the suffix "ja" is grammatically incorrect and the suffix "ia" is the proper way to create a genus from the name Buddle. Nowadays, most European taxonomists use the spelling buddleja, but almost everyone else uses the orthographical variant spelling Buddleia...and we will follow the latter convention in this essay. In recent years major references from the American Horticultural Society, and the Royal Horticultural Society have been reverting from buddleia to buddleja. Many Americans rely on a reference book called Hortus Third which uses the term Buddleia."

So should we decide which should be the main genus spelling and perhaps add the second one as a syn.? That way anyone searching for either spelling would find the one they are looking for.

Oddly, The Plant List has entries for both names and seems to treat them as different entities.

It says, for instance, that "Genus Buddleja is in the family Scrophulariaceae."

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

On the Buddleia page, it says "Genus Buddleia is in the family Loganiaceae."

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

It lists only two accepted species for Buddleia (americana and davidii) and many, many more for Buddleja (including americana and davidii).

If we decide to use one (and I'd vote for Buddleja in that case), the other couldn't be listed as a synonym because it's only an alternative spelling. It would have to be listed as an aka or as an "also sold as" name.

Yes, as soon as I wrote synonym, I realized that it wouldn't be correct either.
What a mess this one is. Blinking

I agree

But since both are 'accepted' we might as well keep both.

Can we combine the two databases then and add the second spelling as AKA or also sold as?

Are these not different plants? If not, and it really is the case that they are simply different spellings, then KEW, theplantlist, et al, need to decide which is a synonym and which is accepted.

No, they are not different plants so I have no idea why the two different family names. They are both considered what is commonly known as butterfly bushes.

From ITIS Buddleja davidii is listed in the Scrophulariaceae family:
http://www.itis.gov/servlet/Si...

and when I entered Buddleia I got a 'No Records Found report:
http://www.itis.gov/servlet/Si...

Here is the whole ITIS list when I entered Buddleja:
http://www.itis.gov/servlet/Si...

well shoot, neither one of those last 2 'SingleRpt' links work, just the first one worked. Looks like you have to enter the genus yourself.

Well, it's a mystery to me. I guess we should pick one and stick with it. It doesn't matter to me which.

Aha, from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B...
Classification

The genus Buddleja is now included in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae;[5] it had earlier been classified in either the Loganiaceae or in a family of its own, the Buddlejaceae

So I too vote for Buddleja with the alternative spelling of buddleia as the 'also sold as' that zuzu suggested.

ITIS is more up to date, so I'm sure The Plant List eventually will remove the entry for Buddleia. Buddleja's clearly the one to keep.

This operation can't be completed until we have an "also sold as" option. Or do we already have one and I missed its introduction?

I think this explains why Buddleia is not listed in most databases:
http://www.tropicos.org/NameSe...

Tropicos lists them all as invalid. Since invalid names are no longer recognized by the ICBN* I'd guess Tropicos will eventually get around to dropping reference to Buddleia, as other DB have already done.
