How do people `read` the fuzz bands to predict the coming weather?

The wooly bear has three color segments. Usually, from head to tail end: black, brown, and black.
The folklore goes - the wider the brown segment, the milder the winter.
What do you see?
Another predictor - field corn. Before harvest, when the ripened, dried corn cob extends well past the husk, you should look for a hard winter.
Anyone care to add more.......

If there is a sale on snow throwers going into the fall, mild winter coming.

What does it mean when you don't see any Wooly's ? There have been zero sightings in my area, and my one friend said she normally has seen quite a few by now Confused

I've found 4.
#1 youngster- all bands equal width.
#2 adult- one band ( stem to stern) dark blackish brown.
#3 and #4 adults- one band (stem to stern) brown !
Never seen these variations before.

Can't see how high the bald face hornet nests are till the leaves fall.

I just started seeing Wooly Bear in my yard yesterday. I didn't really pay any attention to the color or width of the bands. I will pay attention when I see the next one.

Found a wooly yesterday, with a large brown band, so a mild winter. No big surprise, we have had mild winters here for 5 years now! We southerners look at persimmon pits, squirrel tails, a few other things that just don't come to mind at present. Hilarious! Hilarious! (I just woke up).
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.

Mild is good.
The temp. fluctuations seem more of a problem in my little ecosystem.
Still don't know what the height of the hornet nests means.

Not heard of the hornet nests. I don't think I will get that close to one to see the height of it, hornets are evil little dive bombers. Hilarious! Hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I saw a Wooly Bear yesterday and the brown band was larger that the 2 black bands. I sure hope that means a mild winter although we have heard it is suppose to be colder with more snow.

I hope you're right, Jeanne, because whatever weather you get, we get 24 hours later. So...I'm hoping for 70 degrees & sunny until Christmas Eve.
