after my amaryllis bloomed beautifully last winter I kept it in the greenhouse where it grew beautiful healthy green leaves. I stopped watering in late July, thinking it would go into dormancy but it is still sporting those healthy strapping leaves! What should I do with it? I'd like for it to bloom again (don't really care when...I'm not hung up on it blooming for the holidays) but am kind of at a loss as to what to do with it.

I move mine into a dark room and quit watering and when they go yellow and I cut the leafs off. Then they get their rest....

it is depending on amaryllis strain, some need dormancy , some can be green all year around, and bloom ones in a year. I have " apple blossom" that stays green all year around, and after the winter it blooms. Please note that for that u need a hot temperature and a lot of light all year around. I'm not sure of zone 8 is enough, maybe this occurs only in zone 10 or higher.

I never stop watering my amaryllis, even those that goes dormant, till all leaves are gone.

I live in Ohio, so I let them stay outdoorsuntil just before a freeze, so they will do dormant. If you live in Washington I expect your weather will cool down too (and that daylight hours will shorten also). Withholding water and letting them cool down should force it into dormancy. I agree with Christie. Just stop watering and keep out of direct light. Eventually the leaves will yellow and die back. As long as the bulb doesn't freeze, it will be OK. Sometimes the dormancy is very short in zone 8. New leaves appear within 2-3 weeks of removing the yellowed leaves. If you are not trying to get winter blooms, you can relax about forcing dormancy. Some cultivars never go completely dormant, but still put up some new leaves and bloom in the spring as the day length increases.
