Backyard Coffee

By RobertB
July 25, 2012

I love good coffee. My favorite is Hula Daddy Coffee from Kona, Hawaii. On a trip to Hawaii and the Big Island we spent a day going to the Hula Daddy Coffee Farm and store. It was quite enlightening on the whole process from growing to roasting. Living in zone 9B I thought, why not try a plant, it will be a great conversation piece. Little did I know I would be roasting my own pot of coffee soon.

Great article...I've only seen heaps of "cherries". Had no idea that the flowers were so lovely too. I was right with you and all excited until I got to the "30 minutes of constant whisking"...then I placed my next bean order with Amazon. Rolling on the floor laughing

That does sound good. Not sure I can stand 30 minutes of whisking:) but to fill the house with that wonderful smell might be worth it! And what a beautiful addition to your garden with the coffee tree.

How cool is that! I've seen small Coffea arabica plants for sale at Wal-Mart and Home Depot garden centers over the years but never thought about trying one. I'm sure it wouldn't survive the freezes we've been getting in these parts the past few winters but how neat it would be to be able to brew a pot of coffee made from beans from your own tree! Thanks for the great article!

I looked and looked at culture articles, and neither type of coffee bush can be successfully grown here in the Virgin Islands.

Awesome Robert! Wish I could grow one here. Besides a great cup of coffee, you've got yourself a beautiful plant too.

Bradenton, Florida just south of Tampa Bay. In the little spot of 10A , but I'm surrounded by 9B.

That is where I got mine from, it was just a tiny little plant, a lark really that I got it... my first thought was how cute... Hilarious!

Very tempting! Guess I'd have to create a 9B micro climate here in Phoenix. I think it can be done. I love the flowers, too. I had no idea!

Great write-up, Robert. I've often entertained the thought of growing my own coffee but would have to overwinter it in the greenhouse.

I was down your way a couple months ago. I think I'll just wait till the next time I come to Bradenton (or is it Bradenton/Sarasota now...both cities seem to have grown into each other!) I'll swing by for a cup of coffee at your house! Smiling

Great pics, by the way! What a pretty plant.

Thanks for your clear and drool-inspiring article!

A simple "no-name" variety plant from Wal-Mart still gave a good cup? Not a Kona variety hand-selected for generations, especially for descendents of the Hawiian royal family?

You combined two of my favorite addictions! gardening and coffee.

Rick, I remember when a neighbor of ours grew some funny tomato plants, right in with the real ones. However, they were too visable, and there were teenagers in the neighborhood, so they disappeard mysteriously.

Fabulous, Robert. I am just down the road from you, and have a spot by the back fence . . .

How laborious was it to peel the red skin from the cherries? I'd imagine commercial growers have a machine to do this.

Since the cherries don't all get red at once, did you have to wait a while to get enough beans to roast?
