Backyard Coffee

I love good coffee. My favorite is Hula Daddy Coffee from Kona, Hawaii. On a trip to Hawaii and the Big Island we spent a day going to the Hula Daddy Coffee Farm and store. It was quite enlightening on the whole process from growing to roasting. Living in zone 9B I thought, why not try a plant, it will be a great conversation piece. Little did I know I would be roasting my own pot of coffee soon.

How laborious was it to peel the red skin from the cherries? I'd imagine commercial growers have a machine to do this.

Since the cherries don't all get red at once, did you have to wait a while to get enough beans to roast?

Howdy neighbor! I tip my hat to you.
Not hard to do, you pinch them between you fingers and it pops off, much like you would squeeze the inside out of a grape.
There is a small amount of "fruit" around the bean which taste a bit like Cantaloupe. One thing I learned from the coffee tour was most coffees they wash this bit of fruit off the bean before roasting... but you can leave it on after you skin them and let that dry on and it makes a sweeter, mellow cup of coffee.
We collected over a period of time of about a month or so.. to get enough to roast. The key... under ripe they get bitter over ripe it gets sour... So about once a day or so one of us would check and pick beans that were ripe...skin it and place it in a bowl to dry...
So far the squirrels and birds don't seem to have a taste for java. Hilarious!
