...on the Ask a Question forums or on the Philodendron/Elephant Ear/ Aroid forum?

This is a graphic that was posted by a friend of mine and aroid expert who is an Administrator on one of the Facebook aroid pages that I belong to. It was done as a measure to answer the 'very FAQ' question from new aroid enthusiasts about their Monstera deliciosa cutting (both variegated and not variegated) and also other aroid cuttings that are rooted the same way. I have his permission to repost this.

This is the post he made on this subject, with a graphic:
"Please direct ALL questions on single node cuttings and advice for rooting to this post unless you feel yours is an exceptional case. Note that it is subject to deletion at the discretion of the Admins if it is not deemed to merit its own post.
This is an effort to reduce the redundant posts that we have had in the recent past on the same subject of cutting viability and rooting problems or advice. The attached image shows a heat map to gauge the quality of a cutting or plant that you receive. Note that this heat map is just indicative and not definitive.Use your judgement in assessing a good balance of the characteristics listed here. The rest of the post explains what each characteristic means and how to act based on it."

So maybe leave out the part that the post would be deleted if not deemed to merit its own post. But it would give people somewhere to look and compare their plant/cutting to a set of characteristics that might give them some better chance to know how to proceed.

This graphic was produced by people who are considered to be pretty expert in the cultivation of aroids specifically. Not generalists.

If its a NO POST that's ok. But it could be helpful to some people if they have a chart to compare their plant to and see what they might be able to expect from their individual situation.

Please, don't blast me with criticism for bringing this up. There is no ulterior motive, except to possibly help new people have a better chance in seeing in print how they should proceed with their rooting and planting procedures.

That is why I am asking the Admins here first, and not just posting this.

It also has the benefit of helping people decide if they might want to pass on an online purchase.... I am not sure how aware some folks who have little interest in aroids are, but some of the one-node or small cuttings of some plants are selling for several hundred dollars in the US (but not in Europe where there isn't price gouging like there is here).

It wouldn't do any good in the Ask a Question Forum because new members don't see the full page of threads before they post their "redundant" questions, and the existing members who go to that forum to offer help wouldn't necessarily know that the post exists. Besides, a friendly personal response is always preferable to a possibly discouraging link that directs the person elsewhere.

It would be useful in what was once called the Aroids Forum, now renamed as Philodendrons, Elephant Ears, and Other Aroids: https://garden.org/forums/view...

I would definitely delete the first three sentences, which sound almost dictatorial. We don't want to chide our members for requesting advice or merely expressing curiosity.

No I was just re-writing what he posted in that place. The main gist to convey is the table of information.

Thumbs up Very useful information indeed! It's a shame we don't have a moderator for the Philodendron/Aroid Forum. I'd love to see that information incorporated into a *sticky* at the top of that forum. It's useful for Monstera cuttings as well as other climbing Aroids!

Could we do a sticky just for this one thing?

Gina, Perhaps if you type a post on the forum and include the photo of that chart, Jon or Dave would approve it and turn it into a sticky. The Philodendron/Aroid Forum https://garden.org/forums/view... doesn't currently have a moderator and I think (other than moderators) only @jon or @dave can make stickies. With your knowledge of Aroids, I think you'd be perfect in the position of moderator for that forum! Please, Please consider volunteering!

Any admin can make a thread "sticky," but it doesn't seem wise to add a sticky thread to one forum when all the other forums are trying to get rid of their sticky threads. @Calif_Sue, @Australis, or one of the other admins could find a home for the thread on the right-hand margin of the forum home page. I won't offer to do it because I've never added anything on to that margin and I don't want to go through the learning process at this time. I'm working on some other things right now.

Oh, I had no idea that forum stickies were being phased out but I do like the information boxes found on the right side of a forum main page which keeps the main page a bit neater in appearance! Thumbs up

Since we haven't had an active moderator on the Florida Gardening Forum in a long while, Jon kindly added a list that I compiled of Florida Arboretums and Botanical Gardens, to the informational box. I'm sure he, or another admin wouldn't mind adding an information box on the Philodendron Forum; members just need to supply the pertinent Aroid information needed. Green Grin!

As there are no mods for the Philodendrons, Elephant Ears, and Other Aroids forum, @jon will need to add the link to the appropriate thread. Gina, let us know if you start a thread with this information in it and then Jon can add a link to it.
