Is this the right forum to ask questions about Epiphyllums? I have night blooming varieties and this year have started cuttings of about 30 different named day bloomers in all colors. Does anyone else have these vividly colored hybrids?

I have three. I do not have names for two. They were sent to me as trades.

The first one I rooted took 3 years to bloom. I finally went on a Epi forum and everyone was talking about a beer fertilizer they were using and I tried it and have had lots of blooms since and it seems to be a miracle juice for my epi.

The one I have that is named is China Lake

Thanks for the recipe Cinta! China Lake is on my "Dream" list to get someday. It is just beautiful!!!

I also have a night bloomer that looks a lot like the white one you showed. It is very old, more than 20 years. this year it had 18 blooms on it in one night. I am guessing my new cuttings of all different colors will take 3 years to get to blooming. Oh well, it gives me one more thing to live for!

I only have one. It has the old fashioned white bloom. These are so pretty but I find the plants become too huge to overwinter for me.

Cinta ~ do you find the colored Epiphyllums to be as fragrant?

The fragrance is my favorite part ~ when they open at night the fragrance drifts throughout the yard and smells so wonderful. Kristi

Pod no I do no find the colored ones fragrant at all. My white is very fragrant and the color ones I do not detect much fragrance. The color ones do stay open longer. The red stays open for a couple of days and the same for the yellow.

So your trade is fragrance or longer bloom.

I agree they are hard to winter I have found it easier to purchase the hanging pots and I have found a good area to hang it to winter indoors.

beautiful. I'm amazed they do so well in pots, I thought they needed something to climb.

I don't think I have ever seen a climbing one, I have only seen them in hanging pots.

yes, you're right. I'm thinking of the climbing cactus that goes up trees and walls.

These are beautiful. I have a very old one that you can see on my Cubits under the forum Orchid Cactus and it was a noid when I got it but I kept sending pictures to have it identified by other professionals who do that all the time and they gave my girl a name that I could use when selling her. I did not want to mislead anyone by saying she was what she was not....now I feel o.k. about telling people about her. She too is ugly but what beautiful blooms she has.

Hop on over and take a look.

I may have her listed here on my list but the better pictures are on the Cubits forum.

Those blooms must be at least four or five inches across. Amazing the size of some of these blooms on these ugly plants. Smiling
