The flower, spines and stem, AND the dichotomous split are a dead giveaway. This is not backebergiana

I would agree the plant is probably M. karwinskiana, for the reasons listed. @Englishgardener I would like to propose moving this plant to that listing. Please let us know if you would have a problem with the move.
