Control Those Weeds: Garlic Mustard

By paulgrow
August 1, 2012

This is the third article in a series that will offer descriptions and control measures for some of the most common weeds. For the most part I will be referring to weeds found in the Midwest because that’s where I live and these are the ones I’m most familiar with.

Between the garlic mustard and the japanese honeysuckle, our woods are being choked out. Since I was working a lot when it was going to seed, I didn't get a chance to pull much of it, so next year should really be scary.
I saw a clever ad in a local paper this spring. It went something like this: "Acres of garlic mustard, a very healthy organic green, free for the picking."
It included a link to an article about the health benefits of eating it. I wonder if it worked...

wow, a weed I *don't* have? *shock* I'll trade you: this Garlic Mustard for either knapweed or bindweed!! I also have some kind of clover growing that has a taproot that is usually about 4-6X the length of the plant's height! So if the plant is 1' tall, the taproot will usually, honest-to-friggin-goodness 4-5 FEET long!! Almost IMPOSSIBLE to get it all!!

Does that clover-type plant have little yellow flowers? If so, we have them, too, and they spread like crazy.

Renee - Yea, cute little flowers. They aren't bad plants, but when they're in the middle of my roses, they just don't look right. So that's why I yank 'em.
