You definitely want to make sure that it has healthy roots. If it does not, e.g. the brown, dried stuff is between the green plant and the ground and there are no living roots into the ground, then you will need to remove the dead, dried growth, trim if needed and place the green, living part of the plant in contact with the ground, so that it can re-root.
At that point in time, you may find it helpful to cut the plant in half. Be sure to let the cut dry, then place the pieces in contact with the ground. Whether you do surgery or not, misting the plant will help keep it going if there are no or limited roots.
