Your preaching to the choir Cottage Rose. I prefer not talking about Politics and Religion too. I may disagree with someone, but if they start going on and on about it I put and end to the conversation fast. Smiling If I agree with them, I just tell them "Your preaching to the choir". :)

Kathleen I love your fenceline roses. I plant all mine along the fencelines too -- originally because it was a hard space to mow - but I haven't achieved the same effect. Not yet anyway.

That picture was take 3 or 4 years after we moved them. It was the first year that most of them actually bloomed. I've since lost some of those bushes nearest the walnut trees. Fortunately, I have multiples of everything, so they are gone but not forgotten. I tell people the roses up here are so wild we have to fence them.

Kathleen, I love that picture. It's so idyllic and it creates such a relaxing mood. Now I want a farm.

I like the type of religious or political discussion that happens in a place like Cubits.org, because you can walk away from it by leaving that cubit and know that no one will follow you to harass you anywhere else. Ironically, I ran into some really nasty political and religious harassment in DG, where those discussions were confined to d-mails and tended to continue long after you chose to ignore the person.

I understood Dave's caveat against religious and political discussion. I was there at the beginning before it was stated and there were some rather nasty things going on, and after 9/11 it was very bad for awhile.

On the other hand, it is nearly impossible to discuss farming and food production in the the US without slipping into politics, and so I have a forum for just that purpose.

I also enjoy a civil discussion of religions and have found a Cubit where that happens, even though I'm not a Pagan.

What I like so much about the Rose Cubit is that I can talk with you about my old roses and not feel like I'm totally ignorant of 'real' roses, ie hybrid teas, which may spend a season with me and then die a horrible death under 25 feet of snow. It's nice to be able to talk and share the roses I know and learn about the roses others have without the, hmm, snobbery.

People are weird aren't they? This notion of a world at peace and harmony is never going to happen when we can't even talk about roses without getting uppity. Rolling my eyes.

Kathleen - I tried looking up Wickwire Corners in NY as I moved from NNY in '01 and can't find it. What town you near? I lived in Watertown, which is an hour north of Syracuse, and my parents are selling their house in Oxbow, which is god-awful north, 8 miles N & W of Gouveneur and about 15 miles from the St. Lawrence. *I* understand 25 feet of snow, especially when you get that amount in less than 2 weeks.

We're in the far southwest corner of the state. Clymer is the township. Wickwire Corners doesn't actually exist anymore, but I think it's a cool name.

One thing that gets on my nerves is the organic gardening police. I am glad to hear what natural means work for people, but don't want to be harassed if I decide to use another method. I prefer my roses with leaves and am not going to discard my beloved blackspot magnets.

I'm with you, Andi, in being annoyed by the organic gardening police. We have a new person in our neighborhood who freaks when she sees anyone using roundup on the weeds, but it's not as though she's going to pull all the neighbors' weeds for them instead. She's very young and some of my neighbors are in their 80's. She probably can't even imagine how difficult it is for them to get down on the ground and pull weeds by hand.

What some of the organic radicals also forget is that just because something is organic does not mean it is harmless.

I just love messing with sales people when they're trying to selling me something & they tote "it's 100% organic". I usually respond "so isn't lead." unless it's one of those organic Gardner police people because then I'll respond "so isn't hemlock."

Just cuz it comes from the earth doesn't mean it's safe. After all, heroin comes straight from poppy seeds, crack cocaine comes from coca plant, right from the beautiful rainforests. And, of course, let's not forget about asbestos, which used to be mined right here in the rocky mountains. All natural /=/ unequivecally safe.

I always say, 'Oh, carbon based?'

back to the original post (sort of), I was over at DG and noticed that they are running one of my old articles. It was a very strange sensation.

Every single article that comes through on the DG weekly mail is an article written 2-5 years ago. Nothing new happening in the gardening world?
